Es Mercadal - Camí d'en Kane

This route takes you along one of the most important roads in Menorca, built during the British occupation in the XVIII century under the orders of the governor Richard Kane and used for crossing the island for over a century. The road fell into disuse once the current main road was built, and in fact this route only takes you as far as Es Mercadal, as after that it is no longer public and goes through private property.

You start from the Mercadal cemetery behind the industrial estate, which can also be accessed on the slip road by the main one to Ciutadella.

The lane is surfaced and can be busy to start with. After the first kilometer you go into a wooded area which is part of ANEI (Natural Area of Special Interest), where you will see and hear various species of birds. Cross the little Montpalau bridge and soon you will be clear of the woods and in pasture land.

The hill is a bit steep in parts, but you soon reach the limits of Mercadal, where you come to the closed gates of the Santa Maria de Calòritx estate and have to turn back.
