Crafts

There is a long tradition of craftsmanship in Menorca, covering quite a range of crafts. Skills are passed on down the ages, forging a taste for well made craftwork, both traditional and contemporary.

The list of crafts is endless, covering an array of fields: Food and drink (chiefly Mahón-Menorca cheese, traditional pastries, liqueurs). Woodwork (especially the Menorcan farm gates made of wild olive wood). Fire (recovering the art of charcoal production). Stone building (delightful dry stone walls). Leather goods (bags and accessories). Visual arts (sculpture, art restoration, screen printing). Textiles (sewing, upholstery). Pottery (from mainstream pottery to ceramic art). Ironwork (blacksmiths combine traditional ironwork with decorative elements). Paper and cardboard (used in the unusual craft of mask making). Clothing and shoe making (particularly the famed summer sandal, the abarca). Adornments and decorative arts (renowned designer jewellery and costume jewellery production). Beauty products (soap making using local flowers). Time measurement (the meticulous work of watchmakers).

The number of small workshops dotted about the island reflects the importance of crafts in Menorca. Artisans sell their work in local shops and craft markets. The island council Consell Insular de Menorca has created a guarantee label named ‘Artesanía de Menorca’. The label embodies the creative craftsmanship of the island’s artisans, in recognition of their skills and the quality of their work.

Come and visit the craft centre Centre Artesanal de Menorca, located in the town of Es Mercadal, and find out more about local crafts. The centre holds a permanent display of handicrafts and a small shop. Its purpose is to promote and support local crafts and artisan products. Temporary exhibitions are held as well as a variety of activities and audiovisual displays.
